You might not appreciate until much later in your life how much this moment means to them. Or how that bond of obligation, love, and duty between you matters more than anything else.In fact, thats what I really want to talk to you about today. In a world where we obsessively document our own lives, most of us dont pay nearly enough attention to what we owe one another. Now, this isnt just about calling your parents more, although Im sure theyd be grateful if you did that. Just look at the motto not for ones self, but for ones own. Youve been fortunate to live, learn, and grow in a city where human currents blend into something magical and unexpected. Where unmatched beauty, natural beauty, literary beauty, musical beauty, cultural beauty, seem to spring unexpectedly from the ba you. The people of New Orleans use two tools to build this city the unlikely and the impossible. Wherever you go, dont forget the lessons of this place. The coastal communities, including some righ t here in Louisiana, that are already making plans to leave behind the places theyve called home for generations and head for higher ground. The fishermen whose nets come up empty. The wildlife preserves with less wildlife to preserve. The marginalized, for whom a natural disaster can mean enduring poverty.Just ask Tulanes own Molly Keogh, whos getting her Ph.D. this weekend. Her important new research shows that rising sea levels are devastating areas of Southern Louisiana more dramatically than anyone expected. Tulane graduates, these are peoples homes. Their livelihoods. The land where their grandparents were born, lived, and died.When we talk about climate change or any issue with human costs, and there are many, I challenge you to look for those who have the most to lose and find the real, true empathy that comes from something shared. That is really what we owe one another. When you do that, the political noise dies down, and you can feel your feet firmly planted on solid grou nd. After all, we dont build monuments to trolls, and were not going to start now.If you find yourself spending more time fighting than getting to work, stop and ask yourself who benefits from all the chaos. There are some who would like you to believe that the only way that you can be strong is by bulldozing those who disagree or never giving them a chance to say their peace in the first place. That the only way you can build your own accomplishments is by tearing down the other side.We forget sometimes that our preexisting beliefs have their own force of gravity. Twelve million people were unemployed, and conventional wisdom said the only thing to do was to ride it out, wait, and hope that things would turn around. But the governor of New York, a rising star named Franklin Roosevelt, refused to wait. He challenged the status quo and called for action. He needed people to stop their rosy thinking, face the facts, pull together, and help themselves out of a jam. He said The country demands bold, persistent experimentation. It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it and try another. But above all, try something.This was a speech to college students fearful about their future in an uncertain wo rld. He said Yours is not the task of making your way in the world, but the task of remaking the world. The audacious empathy of young people, the spirit that says we should live not just for ourselves, but for our own. Thats the way forward. From climate change to immigration, from criminal justice reform to economic opportunity, be motivated by your duty to build a better world. Young people have changed the course of history time and time again. And now its time to change it once more.I know, I know the urgency of that truth is with you today. Feel big because no one can make you feel strong. Feel brave because the challenges we face are great but you are greater. 3D Printing A Blank Canvas for Creativity 3D Printing A Blank Canvas for Creativity Last fall, the weltweit art world was awash in exhibitions featuring the latest in 3D printed prints, sculptures, photographs, and other manufactured works of techno-aesthetics.Artists are training their additive manufacturing (AM) sights on subjects ranging from Andy Warhols hair to the formerly unseeable phenomenon of motion, displaying their 3D wares in elite galleries.Sculptor Frank Stella and konzeptioner Maya Lin are among the best-known established artists who have adapted AM technologies to express their creative vision. They and more than 80 other digital DaVincis are featured in Out of Hand Materializing the Post Digital, billed as the worlds first major museum exhibition exploring the impacts of digital fabrication technologies on art and design. Running through June 2014, at New Yorks Museum of Art and Design (MAD), the collection showcases works from around the world produced during the m ediums first transitional decade.David McFadden, MADs chief curator, says the exhibits importance goes beyond aesthetics. The event, and its repeat performances in Paris and New York, surveys the state of the art in AM in industry and medicine. For example, last years attention grabber was the worlds first 3D-printed car, Urbee, from KOR EcoLogic and Stratasys. But more and more focus is being devoted to fine art and design, its organizers say.The shows website emphatically states that 3D Printshow is not a tradeshow. But in borrowing some of the traditional trappings such as an exhibition and professional conferences, the fair underscores the integral commercial and technological aspects of the discipline. Any art buff knows thats Andy Warhols territory.The man who called his studio a Factory and famously elevated soup cans into fine art would have embraced 3D printing, say the proprietors of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. In June, the museum unfurled Factory 2.0, a collection of 3D-printed reinterpretations of Warhol or Warhol-esque works. From absurdly enormous depictions of Warhols signature fright wigs to copies of iconic artworks such as Eight Elvises, the exhibit explores the artists fascination with mass production, mass marketing, and mass consumption. Belgian 3D printer Materialise joined in the fun, displaying the 3D-printed Pop Art-inspired works of five finalists entered in its online Andy Warhol Contest.DesignFew companies in the world symbol ize the synergies between business, design, and technology better than Nike and even fewer take the trouble to create stunning works of art to celebrate those connections. Nikes recent art exhibit, The Art and Science of Supernatural Motion, is a perfect case in point. To coincide with the launch of new high-tech running shoes, Nike enlisted digital artist Daniel Widrig to capture the essence of the body in motion in a sculpture.Widrig, designer of the first 3D-printed dress, chose to create a 4-meter-long spiraling wall sculpture based on a series of digital images showing a figure in motion. Due to its size, the work had to be created in three pieces and invisibly bound together. Working with Materialises experts and its mammoth stereolithography machine, Widrig had to print the huge design in three pieces, but his vision required it to look like one harmonious structure. That required intricate design algorithms to create unseen snap-together connection points and other support features strong enough to hold the components together discretely. The finished product briefly toured galleries in Milan, Tokyo, London, and New York before landing in its permanent home at Nike headquarters in Oregon last fall.Michael MacRae is an independent writer.
